 Letter from the DirectorImages of bold art and warm crowds gathered for First Friday receptions, and the charged sensations of concerts in the gallery fortify me for the change of seasons. As summer fades, leaving us wanting for warmth, at least we can anticipate lots of great art on the slate for fall and winter. September is sensational with the adrenaline-charged alchemy of Ann-Margret Wimmerstedt‘s new encaustics beside the clay-mation of Mitsuko Ikeno’s sculptures. A terrific, innovative program with favorite musicians, Heidi Senungetuk and Juliana Osinchuk, takes a new twist alongside Native American music award winner, Steven Alvarez, in mid-September. You’ll remain light on your feet as fall progresses and pianist, Scott Cossu, returns with Ann Lindquist on flute. Then settle in for a thoughtful collaboration of sculpture and text between partners, Margo Klass and Frank Soos, in October. Artist in Schools is gearing up for an exciting year, serving 10 schools in our area. The Artists in Schools is made possible through partnership between the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the Rasmuson Foundation. New this year is “Cameraless Filmmaking” and “Puppetry” with BuzzOplex Productions, offering marionette theater. The energy and talent of Elizabeth Petersen shines in her new collection of paintings in November. It will feel like opening presents early, when December’s show “Out of the Box”, curated by Rika Mouw, reveals dozens of new sculptural jewelry works by Alaskan artists. Once again, I look forward to the cultural comforts of the colder seasons in Homer. Inside the gallery it’s always blooming! |
