Portfolio Competition Rules and Instructions

Eligibility: Open to amateur and professional photographers residing in the U.S. working in any photographically derived medium (traditional, digital or alternative processes). Bodies of work exhibited in Homer within the last 2 years or work produced under instruction are not eligible for this competition. Individuals of the Homer Photo Fest 09 organization committee, staff or contractors are not eligible to enter.

Entries: One entry is considered a minimum of 15 images to a maximum of 20 images. Please submit images that represent a cohesive body of work along a common theme or project.

Images may originate in any format, but must be submitted digitally on Compact Disk. CD and case must be clearly labeled as follows:

Photographer’s last name and first name
Title of body of work (abbreviated as needed).
Photographers address, phone number and email address
Please do not put any other information on the CD or case.


Individuals are not limited to the number of entries (portfolios) they can submit. Each entry must be submitted with proper support materials on CD (jpg files, MS Word documents), a signed entry form and entry fee (Checks or credit cards are accepted. Make check payable to Bunnell Street Gallery) for each portfolio entered. All materials submitted will not be returned. Use check list for each entry, mail each entry separately, do not mail multiple entries in one envelope. Although individuals are not limited to the number of entries they may submit, only one portfolio from a photographer may be selected for exhibition.

Deadline: Mailed entries must be post marked by May 1, 2009. Hand delivered entries will be accepted until May 8. All materials (jpgs images and MS Word documents) must be on one CD (per portfolio). A hardcopy signed entry form and payment must accompany each entry. Entries submitted without the proper forms, payment or signature will be disqualified. The Homer Photo Fest retains the right to judge whether entries meet the requirements for the photo competition.

Image Specifications: 1550 pixels on the longest side @ 72 dpi. Baseline JPG saved at high quality (9). Name each image file with an identifying number and your last name (e.g. 01smith.jpg) which corresponds to your caption list (see Written Materials below).

Written Materials: Place at the top left of all written materials the photographer’s last name and first name, address, phone number and email address. All written material must be submitted as a MS Word document. Do not send prints, newspaper clippings, or any other additional material they will not be seen by the jurors. Please submit:

• Caption list: Number image list to correspond with the image files on submitted CD. Provide titles, final print size, medium, and date of completion for each image.
• One-page artist’s statement outlining the theme or project represented by the submitted images.

Entry Fee: $50.00 per entry (portfolio)

Selected Artists: Notification of selected artists: June 1, 2009. Ready to hang work must be in Homer by July 27, 2009.

Awards:
One artist will be awarded “Jurors Choice” and receive:
• Paid round trip travel to Homer, Alaska 
• Free entry to attend the Homer Photo Fest 2009 workshops and reviews
• A $300 stipend
• A solo exhibition of their selected portfolio during the Homer Photo Fest 2009

The two artists will receive “Honorable Mentions” and receive:
• Free entry to attend the Homer Photo Fest 2009 workshops and reviews
• A $300 stipend
• A solo exhibition of their selected portfolio during the Homer Photo Fest 2009

All selected artists are highly encouraged to attend the Homer Photo Fest 2009 and participate in the workshops, discussions, exhibition openings, receptions, and the celebration of photography. Selected artists attending the Homer Photo Fest 2009 are required to give a short artist talk before their opening reception.

All artwork must be in Homer finished and ready to hang by July 27, 2009 (unless arranged differently with the exhibiting venue). Shipping is incumbent on the artist. Exhibition openings are during the Homer Photo Fest 2009 August 4–8, 2009. Selected artists may be requested to submit higher resolution scans of their images for purposes of promotion, publications and exhibitions. All copyrights remain with the photographer.
